Peyronie's disease | Penis Pain in Charleston SC

What to Know About Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease (PD) is when a plaque of fibrous scar tissue forms under the skin of the penis in the tunica albuginea, the thick elastic membrane encasing the cylinders of spongy tissue called the corpora cavernosa which fill with blood and cause the penis to painfully increase in size and firmness.

These plaques, most common on the the top and bottom of the shaft, can often be felt through the skin, and can cause the penis to bend or become indented during erections. This can make sexual intercourse painful, difficult, or impossible. Other problems can include anxiety about sexual performance and concern about the appearance of the penis.

The exact cause of Peyronie’s is unknown.

Many believe that it is the result of acute or chronic (repetitive) injury to the penis. Others suspect an underlying autoimmune or connective tissue disease. Risk factors include family history and aging.

The goal of treatment is to reduce discomfort and maintain the ability to have intercourse.
